I use the humanistic, Jungian, psychodynamic, feminist, and cognitive modalities. In other words, I take an insight-oriented approach that focuses on the whole individual (instead of just focusing on symptoms or labels). I try to understand the core personality, or psyche, of my clients and together champion it and use it as a means of healing. I value 'a-ha!' moments when something clicks and things come together or a masked pattern or theme is revealed.
This is a very good question. Research has shown that the therapeutic alliance between a client and therapist is crucial to the success of therapy. In other words, it's very important that you feel comfortable and at ease with your therapist. Even if it means shopping around, make sure you find a therapist whom you trust, respect, and find value in the work.
My style is interactive. It's important for me that my clients feel comfortable and at the same time I see my role as helping piecing insights together as well as respectfully questioning and challenging what I don't understand or might disagree with. It's not about figuring out who's right, but more so gaining new perspectives, different angles, and a more complete and accurate portrait of who you are. I'm not one of those therapists who sits back and nods their head through the entire session−I'll jump in with a comment or question or make a connection when I see one. Oftentimes my clients and I also use humor, but the most important aspect is personal growth and overcoming adversity.
I've worked with people dealing with a spectrum of concerns, from relationship issues, to feelings of sadness/depression, to past trauma and loss, to eating disorders, and to diagnosable disorders (e.g. Bipolar, PTSD). Whoever I'm working with, my agenda is always the same: collaborate with my client, find a way to stop counter-productive behaviors, and identify and champion the inner core or psyche.
